Wild boar hunted as sheep killed
BY GILLIAN HARRIS, SCOTLAND CORRESPONDENT
A HERD of wild boar is being hunted in the Galloway hills after two
sheep were killed.
Farmers and walkers have been told not to approach the animals,
thought to have escaped from a farm. The boars that mauled the two
sheep in Carsphairn, Dumfries and Galloway, last weekend were
probably defending their offspring.
Bill Little of the Scottish Society for the Protection of Animals, said
that the sheep had wide scores down their hind quarters. "I had never
seen anything like it," he said. "The boars must have used their
tusks."
Kenneth Wallace, a farmer, said that he had seen wild boars several
times over the last two months but this was the first attack on
livestock. Two boars were shot earlier this year but recent sightings
suggest that there are still three adults and two young boars on the
loose.
John Young, another farmer who saw the boars digging for food in his
fields, said: "They certainly did a lot of damage but the police have
been unable to get anyone to own up to having them."
Dumfries and Galloway police are investigating sightings. "We are
urging everyone to use extreme care and not to approach any
suspicious looking animal," a spokesman said.
